Planning a trip to Universal Studios Japan? You’re in for an unforgettable experience at one of our favourite theme parks.
If you’re a big theme park fan, you’re in for a treat at USJ. Featuring all the fun of the US parks, plus a little extra Japanese magic, this is truly one of the most beautifully-themed destinations in the world.
In fact, we urge you to take a couple of days out of your Osaka itinerary to visit USJ. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker ready to conquer epic coasters, a fan of adorable themed snacks (of which there are plenty!), or just eager to dive into the latest ride at Super Nintendo World, here’s what you need to know before you visit.

How to get USJ Tickets

Although you can grab them at the park entrance, we recommend purchasing Universal Studios Japan tickets in advance of your trip. You can purchase via the official website, but we love using Get Your Guide for our theme park tickets as the conversion rate is often cheaper. Plus, it means you can keep all of your tours/tickets in the same place.
Getting to Universal Studios Japan

Getting to USJ from central Osaka is straightforward by public transport. We recommend reaching USJ is by train. If you’re starting from Osaka Station, take the JR Osaka Loop Line to Nishikujo Station.
From there, transfer to the JR Yumesaki Line (also known as the Sakurajima Line) and get off at Universal City Station. The park is just a short walk from this station. The journey takes about 15 to 20 minutes and costs approximately ¥180 to ¥200 (around $1.20). You can also opt for a taxi, but this will be significantly more expensive and often not worth it during the morning rush hour.

Best Time of Year to Go to Universal Studios Japan

Ultimately, the best time to visit USJ depends on your preferences. If you want good weather and fewer crowds, spring and autumn weekdays are ideal. For themed experiences and special events, plan your visit during seasonal celebrations – but avoid Halloween and Christmas directly or you’ll spend most of your day shoulder to shoulder in long queues.
We visited in September and it was great – the park wasn’t too busy (the only big queues were in Super Nintendo World) and we got to experience Halloween at USJ. It’s worth checking the yearly calendar in advance to help you plan your visit.
Best Rides at Universal Studios Japan
Hollywood Dream – The Ride

As you step into USJ, you’ll see (and hear) Hollywood Dream – The Ride. This iconic rollercoaster looms above as you wander inside and through the Hollywood-themed area. Despite having zero inversions, this coaster is one of the most thrilling in the entire park.
Featuring two different ride experiences and numerous songs to choose from as you ride, this is a Japan exclusive you do not want to miss. Pssst… the “Backdrop” version allows you to experience the entire ride backwards. It can be worth waiting until afternoon to ride this, as most people start their day with the attractions near the front of the park.

Flying Dinosaur

If you’re a thrill seeker, the Flying Dinosaur is the top attraction at USJ. This flying coaster suspends guests below the track in a horizontal, face-down position, immersing them in the feeling of flight.
If you can brave opening your eyes, you’ll notice that the ride’s incredible theming transports guests to the Jurassic Park universe, complete with lush greenery and plenty of dinos. This ride is another Japan exclusive, so it’s well worth the (often long) wait time.
TRAVEL TIP ✈️
Security is stringent on this ride (for good reason). You must remove all jewellery, bags, and personal items before boarding. Either leave it with a friend or use the free lockers provided.
Jaws

Don’t skip Jaws if you want to ride a classic (and nearly extinct) Universal attraction. Board a boat for a peaceful guided tour of Amity’s waters – although this quickly takes a turn as the infamous great white shark attacks the vessel multiple times.
With sudden splashes, simulated explosions, and animatronic shark encounters, the ride oozes with retro charm. Make sure to ride at night for an even scarier experience.

Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge

Ready for a game? Grab your pals and head to Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge, which uses cutting edge technology to place riders inside the Mario Kart world.
The ride combines AR with physical sets and a moving track to create an interactive racing experience. Before you board, you’ll pick up an AR headset shaped like Mario’s cap, which allows you to collect virtual items throughout the race. Expect long queues, though it’s definitely worth riding once if you haven’t had a chance in Universal Hollywood.
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey

Harry Potter fans will want to ride Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, which is housed inside the rather impressive Hogwarts Castle. The attraction uses robotic arms, which attach to the ride vehicles and move guests around the Hogwarts grounds.
The ride’s queue is equally special. As you prepare to board your vehicle, you’ll tour the likes of Dumbledore’s Office, the Gryffindor Common Room, and the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom.
Donkey Kong Minecart Madness

Recently opened as part of the new Donkey Kong Country expansion in Super Nintendo World, Mine Cart Madness is a fun family coaster. Join Donkey Kong and the gang for a high-speed mine cart ride, racing through the mines to protect the Golden Banana from the Tiki Tak Tribe.
WaterWorld (Show)

The WaterWorld Show is one of the USJ’s most popular experiences. Based on the 1995 film WaterWorld, the show offers an immersive experience with jaw-dropping stunts, explosive action, and breathtaking special effects. The story revolves around a battle for survival and a search for “dry land” in a world covered by water.
The live-action spectacle features actors portraying characters from the film, including the heroic Mariner, the villainous Deacon, and other inhabitants of the WaterWorld. The show is in Japanese, but we followed along pretty well with our limited knowledge.
TRAVEL TIP ✈️
Check the park’s daily schedule for performance times and plan to arrive around 15 minutes early to get a good seat – avoid the “splash zone” if you don’t want to get wet. The show runs for around 25 minutes.
Top Tips For Visiting USJ
Use the Universal Studios Japan App

Do not visit the park without downloading the official USJ app first – this goes for any theme park, really. This way, you’ll be able to see real-time information on ride wait times, show schedules, and dining options. Plus, you can keep all your reservations handy. Make sure you download the app on Android or IOS before you go.
Getting into Super Nintendo World

Unlike the other themed areas in USJ, you will need a timed entry ticket to enter Super Nintendo World. There are a few ways to get this: through the USJ app once you enter the park in the morning, at the kiosks near the entrance of the park, or with certain Express Passes.
The easiest way: when you scan into the park, connect to WiFi and head to the USJ app, where you will be prompted to apply for a timed entry slot for SNW.
Purchase the Express Pass

If you’re short on time, it might be worth purchasing the Universal Studios Japan Express Pass. USJ offers several types of Express Passes, tailored to different rides or experiences. For example:
- Express Pass 4: Covers four attractions.
- Express Pass 7: Covers seven attractions.
These passes are separate from regular park tickets and can be pricey (often over $100). Generally, we only recommend them if you’re visiting during a busy season or short on time.
