Wondering where to stay on Mount Fuji? If you’re climbing Mount Fuji, staying somewhere on the mountain overnight is a must – even if, like us, you want to bullet climb.

Nestled in the foothills of this legendary mountain are a variety of accommodations. From traditional ryokans offering a glimpse into Japan’s rich cultural heritage to modern resorts boasting panoramic views of the mountain, there is no shortage of options. These are our top picks.

The Best Places to Stay on Mount Fuji

Fujikyu Unjo Kaku – Yoshida 5th Station

Where we stayed at the 5th station with Mount Fuji in the background

We opted to stay at Fujikyu Unjo Kaku at Mount Fuji’s 5th Station. This no-frills dormitory has a restaurant and shop on site and cost us 7,700 yen (approx £40) each for one night. This accommodation also has the option to rent lockers for around 500 yen, but we chose to keep our bags on our bed as we knew we wouldn’t be sleeping much.

The dorm is divided by gender (as all hostels are in Japan) so we had to split up for the night. The room itself was extremely clean and tidy, though very noisy throughout the night as people started to climb at different times. We woke up early to begin our climb at around 4am.

We’ll warn you, the bathrooms were unpleasant. We opted to use the toilets in one of the shops opposite instead as they were far nicer. Using the toilet was free but showers cost 500 yen (around £2.50) for 5 minutes.

Goraikou-kan – Yoshida/Subashiri Trail 8.5th Station

One of the most popular places to stay on Mount Fuji is at Goraikou-kan. This building is located at 8.5th Station on the Yoshida/Subashiri Trail and is the best place to stay if you want to wake up early and reach the summit for sunrise.

Like the rest of the ryokans on the mountain, this spot is extremely basic. However, there’s plenty of space to sleep and grab a bite to eat. Just make sure to book your bed well in advance of your climb as this accommodation books up incredibly quickly.

Munatsuki Edoya – Yoshida/Subashiri 8th Station

If you don’t manage to get a reservation for Goraikou-kan, we recommend staying at Munatsuki Edoya.

This ryokan is located on the same trail at the station before, which means you’ll have to walk a little bit further (and wake up slightly earlier) to catch the sunrise from the summit, but it’s worth it.

Kamaiwakan – Yoshida 7th station

Wondering where to stay on Mount Fuji? Look no further – as one of the best huts on the most frequented trail, it’s no wonder Kamaiwakan is one of the more popular places to bed down on Fujisan.

You can choose between a number of rooms here, from the incredibly basic shared dorms to private rooms that are slightly more comfortable. Opt for the Small Room With a View for the most magical experience.

Goraikou Sansou – Fujinomiya 7th Station

For those heading on the Fujinomiya Trail, embark on a 90-minute ascent from the 5th station of Mt. Fuji and you’ll wind up at Goraikou Sansou.

This wooden hut is small but super cosy and the perfect resting spot part-way through a Mt Fuji climb. Plus, the staff serves guests a tasty curry from homegrown vegetables – the best kind of fuel before you tackle the summit.
